How’s your week going? I’m excited to have a short shift today and it’s my day off tomorrow, I’m hoping to look at houses but I’m not sure how that’s going to go.
Today I have another grouped review for you, I figure that grouping similar products together will make for longer, more interesting posts and will also allow me to get through the reviews I have quicker in anticipation for Vegfest. This time it’s vegan chocolate.
The first product I am going to review is the raw chocolate and pink Himalayan salt pie from The Raw Chocolate Pie Company. I’ve seen this in the fridge of my local independent health food shop for a while and I’ve been curious but put off by the price. I was already buying a fair amount on the day I bought this and I figured, what’s an extra couple of quid? The lady behind the till assured me that the pie is absolutely divine so I tried it as soon as I got home. The pie has a deep cacao scent and a soft texture with almonds throughout so it’s also crunchy, and almost gritty. I was a bit disappointed that I didn’t like the taste, the cacao was very strong and a bit bitter. The pie was also more salty than I expected it to be. I can see how others might like this product but it just wasn’t for me. I paid £2.48 for the 60g pie. If you like the idea of little raw pies then give this company a look because they have quite a large range of flavours.
Ingredients: Raw coconut oil, Raw agave nectar, Raw cacao nibs (16%), Carob flour, Lucuma powder, Ground almonds, Pink Himalayan salt (1.2%).
Another chocolate product I tried recently was these chocolate covered pulses from Marks & Spencers. I bought this on a whim and now, thinking back, I don’t know why I thought I’d like it. The combination of really dark chocolate and dried pulses didn’t work for me and I wouldn’t buy it again. I can’t remember what I paid for the little packet.
A chocolate product that I actually liked as this Ritter Sport peppermint dark chocolate. I love the combination of mint and chocolate. The chocolate isn’t too dark and is thin so it’s not so rich. The peppermint cream inside is delicious, I’d eat this again. I paid £1 for the 100g slab in a pound shop. I know that the ingredients below list butterfat but i checked the packet twice and the bar I bought didn’t have butterfat listed or I wouldn’t have bought it. I’m wondering if it was really old stock because I bought it from pound shop? I will be careful to check the packet if I see these again so I don’t get caught out.
Ingredients: Sugar, Cocoa Mass, Vegetable Fat (Palm, Coconut), Cocoa Butter, Glucose Syrup, Stabiliser (Sorbitol Syrup), Butterfat, Emulsifier (Lecithins (Soy)), Peppermint Oil, Natural Flavouring, Dark Chocolate: Cocoa Solids 50% minimum.
Lastly, I finally tried a Vego bar, the chocolate that every one seems to go crazy for. The chocolate was quite soft, like a semi-hard version of Nutella which melts away as you chew. The bar also has massive crunchy hazelnuts throughout. I did like the bar but it just felt too full of sugar and too soft for me to feel like it was a chocolate bar. It felt like more of a sweet treat, on par with a biscuit. I would buy it again, and I’m interested in trying their new Vegolino pralines. I paid around £2 for the small 65g bar, and around £3.50 for the larger 150g bar.
Ingredients: Sugar, whole hazelnuts (20%), cocoa mass, hazelnut paste, cocoa butter, emulsifier: soy lecithin, vanilla extract.
