Taifun tofu review

Evening everyone,

I had a bit of a stressful shift yesterday and having two hours less at home but still having to get up at 6am is absolutely rubbish. I am so tired so I don’t really know how my day is going to go. I’ve been having lucid dreams for the past week and I think it’s really wearing me out. Oh well, after today I only have two days left in work. I can do this!

Today I am reviewing Taifun tofu, I tried the smoked and the black forest varieties.

I love these little packets of tofu, you can eat them cold and they only take a little time to cook if you prefer them warm. Taifun make a real range of flavours and I am excited to try all of them. It’s not the same as deep fried tofu but it’s a lot healthier and still has a great texture. As far as I am aware all the packs are 200g, and the tofu I usually buy is 396g but that pack is full of water. I feel like you get a decent amount of solid product in these packets. I paid a bit over £3 for each of these packs at my local independent health food store.

The smoked variety was delicious, I found the smoke subtle which is great because I thought it might be overpowering. I preferred this one in slices, cold, with salad or avocado toast. It kind of had the look of cooked sliced chicken.

Ingredients: Tofu 87% (Soya Beans 55%, Water, Coagulating Agents: Magnesium Chloride, Calcium Sulfate), Soya Sauce (Water, Soya Beans, Wheat, Sea Salt), Almonds 3.4%, Sesame Seeds 3.1%, Beech Wood Smoke.

The black forest variety was also smoked but it had a really interesting taste which I couldn’t quite put my finger on. It’s flavoured with tamari, caraway and parsley. There’s also really lovely onions throughout, even if they have a tendency to fall out of the tofu. I really liked this one as well and used it more in cooking, including placing little slices on top of noodles.

Ingredients: Tofu 91% (Soya Beans 55%, Water, Coagulating Agents: Magnesium Chloride, Calcium Sulfate), Soya Sauce Tamari (Soya Beans, Water, Sea Salt, Rice Wine Mirin [Rice, Water]), Onions, Caraway, Parsley, Beech Wood Smoke.
