Well my holiday is over 😦 Today is my first day back and work and I have been dreading the 6am starts but I suppose getting back into a routine is a good thing. It’s dreary Mondays like this that a bit of chocolate goes down a treat, and who doesn’t love chocolate? I will concede that not all vegan chocolate is amazing, but there are hits and misses with dairy chocolate as well. Recently I have tried some really great vegan chocolate so I thought I’d give you a look at what I’ve been eating.
The first product is from a brand I haven’t tried before, Loving Earth. I picked up their salted caramel chocolate. I was surprised when I opened up the packet and there was a little heart inside, I don’t remember ever seeing heart shaped chocolate before. The bar really smells like coconut and feels solid in your hand but it’s so soft when you bite into it. The chocolate just melts away and it is gorgeous, a mixture of coconut, saltiness and sweetness. I am absolutely in love with this chocolate and can’t wait to try their hazelnut and regular caramel varieties. I paid £1.75 for the chocolate heart in my local vegan shop, but you can buy it from their website for £1.46 plus VAT.
Ingredients: Certified organic fair trade virgin cacao butter (35%), raw cashews, organic evaporated coconut nectar, a pinch of pink lake salt.
The next product I bought was the dairy free chocovered cruncheebites from the Fabulous Free From Factory. These are like tiny little bites of heaven, I had been missing a Crunchie over Christmas and these are a perfect alternative. The honeycomb is great and the chocolate coating isn’t dark and bitter, they also have the added bonus of being tiny little morsels that you can happily snack away on. I love them and have bought several packets since I first tried them. You can find these for around £1.75 online.
Ingredients: Honeycomb (sugar, glucose, sodium bicarbonate (e500ii) (50%), raw sugar (17.5%), cocoa butter, soya flour (11%), cocoa mass, polishing agent (gum arabic, vegetable protein), emulsifier: sunflower lecithin.
A different type of chocolate I tried was this Vita Coco coconut water with chocolate. I was curious about what this would be like as coconut water is quite refreshing and chocolate can sometimes be the opposite of this. I thought it could be similar to the chocolate Rebel Mylk which I really like, it definitely wasn’t. The scent it gives off was pretty much the same as chocolate milk, I didn’t notice any coconut in there. The texture was watery but creamy and I didn’t have too much of a problem with that. My issue was that the chocolate taste was far too strong and a little bitter, it was overpowering and made it difficult to finish the little carton. I wouldn’t buy it again. I paid £1.69 for the 330ml carton.
Ingredients: coconut water (78%), water, coconut milk (2%), sugar, cocoa powder (1%), natural flavours, stabiliser: guar gum.
The next chocolate product is from a brand which I already love, Vivani. The crispy cornflakes variety was the last bar from the brand that I wanted to try so I picked one up. I love the texture and creaminess of this rice milk chocolate, and with that smooth creaminess being off set by sugary, crispy cornflakes…I don’t know, it was like magic in my mouth. Divine. I paid £1 for the 35g bar.
Ingredients: Raw cane sugar, cocoa butter, rice drink powder (rice syrup, dried) 13%, cocoa mass, cornflakes 7 % (corn, raw cane sugar, sea salt), tiger nuts (ground), hazelnut paste, bourbon vanilla extract, sea salt.
Another new product for me was this non dairy chocolate fudge from Melting Pot. I bought this on a whim because I used to love fudge when I was younger, but I was put off eating it because when I squeezed the packet the fudge felt solid and I was sure I was going to break a tooth. I nearly gave it away as a present until I was hungry for chocolate one day and decided to give it a go. I was so glad I did because this stuff is gold. It melts as you bite into it and your mouth is filled with rich, cream, sugary goodness. It doesn’t quite have the right texture of fudge but I fell in love with it and I am excited to try the chocolate and orange variety next. I paid £2 for the 90g pack of fudge.
Ingredients: Sugar, rice drink (water, rice (12%), sunflower oil, calcium, (tri-calcium phosphate), maltodextrin, sea salt, stabiliser (gellan gum), vitamins (B12, D2), acidity regulator ( dipotassium phosphate)), cocoa butter, golden syrup, glucose syrup, brown sugar, cocoa (3.5%), salt.
A brand of chocolate which I had seen around before but never purchased is Solkiki, mainly because their bars are expensive, but around Christmas I bought myself a bar (I also received the same bar in a subscription box so I will talk about that flavour in a different post), and received a bar as a present. The bar I received as a present was the toasted white chocolate. I really like this white chocolate, while the colour isn’t as pure as a dairy white chocolate I don’t mind because this product is absolutely superior when it comes to taste. I was blown away by the simple combination of ingredients because it tasted so good. The texture was creamy and delicious and let me tell you, the bar did not last long! This bar is £4.50 on their website, compared to most of their bars which are £5. I would love to try the strawberry, coconut and pink pepperberry, strawberry cheesecake and Bocos des Toro varieties next.
Ingredients: Organic cane sugar, organic cold-pressed cacao butter, organic coconut, organic strawberry, fresh-crushed pink pepperberries.
The next chocolate I tried was Cleo’s, white chocolate peanut butter cups from Go Max Go Foods. I found that they smelt like authentic Reese’s peanut butter cups, the texture of the centre is also really nice. The peanut butter is good quality and there’s a saltiness that I really enjoyed. However, what let these down is the ‘white chocolate’ coating, there is no chocolate in the product, the coating was more like white icing. It ruined the whole product and really put me off eating them. I wouldn’t purchase again but if they can redeem themselves with their thumbs up, twilight and mahalo bars then I may be persuaded to forgive them. You can find these for around £2 online.

The last product in this review is something which I never actually thought I’d see but I was happy that I found, chocolate and hazelnut coconut jerky from Mighty Bee. This jerky is raw, organic and vegan as well as being free from gluten and refined sugar. The texture was spot on, chewy just like seitan jerky that I’ve tried before, but it was coated in chocolate and pieces of hazelnuts. Also, how many chocolate products can boast that they are one of your five a day? The overall taste was lovely and I finished the pack off before I’d even realised, I kicked myself for not buying two packs. As much as I loved this sweet version when I was eating it I kept thinking that the texture would be amazing with savoury flavours so I was so excited when I visited their website and found out that they also make spicy BBQ and teriyaki versions. I paid £2.85 for the 30g pouch.
